What does black salt comprise of? How does black salt affect health?

Black salt, also known as "kaala namak", is special type of mineral salt used in South Asia having therapeutic values.

It is composed largely of sodium chloride with several impurities lending the salt its colour, taste and smell. The presence of trace minerals and iron gives black salt its colour, though not completely black. They are brownish pink to dark violet translucent crystals when whole, and, when ground into a powder, it is light purple to pink. It has salty taste and has a distinct flavour due to presence of sulphur. Hydrogen sulphide adds the rotten egg odour to black salt.

Black salt is considered to be cooling in nature. It is used as a laxative and digestive aid. It is a cure for flatulence, relieves intestinal gas and heartburn. It is also used for making organic toothpastes by combining it with other mineral and plant ingredients. Black salt can be used for savory snacks, with salads and fruits. Black salt is beneficial in small quantities.
