Importance of Plants in Ayurveda ::

Plants have medicinal properties, and many a times, the usage of such plants go unnoticed in our daily life. There are many plant products we use especially for cooking, and for curing minor ailments. The medicinal properties of plants were identified since long times and Ayurveda is a science that has tapped the usefulness of the available plant resource. Therapeutical properties of medical plants are very useful in healing various diseases and symptoms of illnesses. The main advantage of using plants is that it is purely natural.

Different parts of the plants may have different effects. Care must be taken as some parts of the plants can turn out to be toxic. Usually used are the leaves, fruits, seeds, flowers, bark and roots of the plant, and sometimes the plant as a whole is used for medicine preparation. There are evidences of usage of latex of certain plants for medicine.

The plant products are used in different ways too. They may be sometimes used as it is, but the formulations can be in the form of juice, paste, powder, decoction or infusion. Different ailments can be cured with a single formulation or with the combination of two or more formulations. Each plant has its own effect and it is great to understand the medicinal properties of the plants around us.
