Did you know:
We all know that if we chew the betel leaf (paan), it makes our mouth red. The habit of paan chewing is prevalent in many countries of the world. About 10 percent of the world population is fond of it. Do you know how the paan produces red color?

The paan which we chew is the leaf of a climbing plant called the betel plant. Betel plants are covered with mats to protect them from direct sunlight. They are grown in different parts of Asian countries.

We chew the betel leaf along with many ingredients like small bits of betel nut, lime and catechu (katha). Cardamom, shredded coconut, cloves and some scent may also be added. Obviously, the betel leaf and nut cannot produce red color. Lime is white and does not produce red color. Katha is only substance which produces red color. It is obtained from the stem of a tree called “khadira”(Acacia catechu) . it is pink in color and turns red when boiled with water. The resulting thick paste is applied to paan. When a coat of katha is applied above the lime layer, a chemical reaction takes place which makes the color of katha redder when we chew paan, the mouth also plays a role. The saliva in our mouth also adds to the color. This is how our mouth becomes red on chewing paan.
